I’m Lance Bassett, owner and Naturalist Guide, and it’s my pleasure to invite you on an extraordinary journey into the heart of Katmai National Park and Preserve. Partnered with Erica Hausfeld, owner and Naturalist Guide of Curious Nature Guided Adventures, we bring you the ultimate camping experience.
At Bassett’s Bear Viewing, we specialize in intimate, ethical bear-viewing and photography experiences set against Alaska’s most breathtaking wilderness landscapes. Our base camp provides a comfortable and respectful way to immerse yourself in bear country, offering a front-row seat to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.
We believe that smaller groups create more meaningful and intimate encounters. By welcoming only four to six guests per trip, we keep our footprint light while ensuring each moment with the bears is personal, unrushed, and unforgettable.

About Us
My path to guiding began after retiring from the Navy in 2012. Drawn to the pristine landscapes of Katmai, I found my passion amidst the filming of Disney Nature's "BEARS" movie. Collaborating with award-winning cinematographers, I cultivated my skills and deepened my connection with the natural world. With extensive training and years of guiding experience, I've had the privilege of leading guests from diverse backgrounds, sharing in their wonder as they encounter the marvels of nature. Whether it's the exhilaration of spotting a Coastal Brown Bear or the awe-inspiring vistas of Katmai's extreme landscapes, every moment underscores the wilderness's ability to inspire and transform.
I've been honored to participate in KTVA's "Big Bear Week," guide esteemed Nikon Ambassadors, and contribute to publications like Alaska Magazine and Homer Magazine, showcasing Katmai's wildlife and landscapes.
